The two Ellucian student-information systems compared — who uses each, the technical and data-model differences, and what they mean when you migrate to the cloud or archive.
Both are Ellucian student-information systems, but they come from different lineages and serve different institutions. Banner grew up in large universities; Colleague (originally Datatel) is common in community colleges and smaller private colleges. The differences matter most when you migrate or archive — especially the underlying data model.
| Ellucian Banner | Ellucian Colleague | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical institution | Large universities & multi-campus systems | Community colleges & small/mid private colleges |
| Origin | SunGard/SCT Banner lineage | Datatel Colleague lineage |
| Database | Oracle Database | Historically UniData (multivalue); modernized to SQL in cloud |
| Data model | Relational, Oracle-based schema | Multivalue/file-based concepts in legacy; relational in newer |
| Scope | Student, finance, HR/payroll, financial aid, advancement | Student, finance, HR, financial aid — college-scaled |
| Cloud path | Ellucian cloud / migrate to Oracle Fusion + SIS | Ellucian cloud / migrate or archive |
Banner’s Oracle-based relational schema and Colleague’s legacy multivalue (UniData) concepts extract differently — Colleague data often needs flattening/normalization on the way out.
Years of campus-specific integrations and custom fields exist in both; a migration has to account for them, not just the base tables.
Both cover student, finance, HR and financial aid — so mapping targets (Oracle Fusion, a new SIS) and retention rules are similar.
Whichever you run, records you don’t migrate can be archived read-only for FERPA/Title IV retention and transcript requests.

Banner is typically used by large universities and runs on an Oracle relational database; Colleague (formerly Datatel) is common in community colleges and smaller institutions and historically used a UniData multivalue database. Both are Ellucian SIS/ERP suites covering student, finance, HR and financial aid.
Neither is universally “better” — Banner suits large, complex universities; Colleague suits community and smaller colleges. The right choice depends on institution size, complexity and budget.
Both can migrate to Ellucian cloud or to Oracle Fusion plus a student system. Colleague’s legacy multivalue data usually needs flattening/normalization during extraction; Banner’s relational schema maps more directly. Records not migrated can be archived for retention.
