Oracle Fusion Item Master & Inventory Migration (1M+ items)

Migrating an item master of more than a million inventory items — with categories, VAT and assignment across 18 business units — from Oracle EBS into Oracle Fusion, roughly five times faster than a manual FBDI load.

    What was in scope

    • Item categories
    • Item master — more than 1,000,000 inventory items
    • Item assignment to 18 business units (organization assignments)
    • VAT category on items

    The hard parts

    🔢

    Sheer volume

A million-plus items makes throughput the whole game. Manual FBDI batches don’t scale; Syntra’s pipelined load ran about five times faster and could be re-run cleanly.

    🏢

    Item-to-18-BU assignment

Each item had to be assigned to the correct organizations across 18 business units — encoded once in the tool and applied consistently rather than re-derived per run.

    🧭

    Category & org-code mismatches

Item categories and organization codes did not line up one-to-one with Fusion; these were mapped to Fusion value sets and validated before load.

    🟢

    Inactive items loaded as active

Per the agreed rule, items flagged inactive in the source were loaded as active in Fusion, handled as a transformation rather than a manual edit.

    Approach

    1

    Category & org mapping

Item categories, organization codes and VAT categories mapped to the Fusion targets in Syntra.

    2

    18-BU assignment logic

Organization assignments generated automatically from the encoded business-unit rules.

    3

    Full-volume main runs

The 1M+ item master was proven at full volume in the main load runs to confirm throughput before cutover.

    4

    Reconcile

Source → staged → Fusion counts and column-level checks confirmed every item and assignment landed.

    Frequently asked questions

    How many items were migrated?

More than one million inventory items in the item master, plus their categories, VAT categories and organization assignments across 18 business units.

How was the load kept fast at that volume?

Syntra’s pipelined, validated load ran roughly five times faster than manual FBDI batches, and was safe to re-run because reloads are idempotent.

    How was item-to-business-unit assignment handled?

The 18-BU assignment rules were encoded in the tool and applied consistently to every item, rather than being rebuilt by hand on each run.
