Papervision was Catholic Healthcare Trust's document imaging and content system — home to the bulk of the ~150,000 attachments migrated in the project. Syntra ETL archived ten years of Papervision documents into the Oracle Autonomous (ATP) archive, indexed and searchable via Oracle APEX, so records stay retrievable for legal, audit and insurance needs.
Papervision held scanned documents and images — HR files, financial documents, correspondence and records — that must be retrievable for years for legal, audit, HIPAA and insurance requests.
Papervision was CHT's document-management and imaging system, storing scanned and imported documents indexed for retrieval. Much of the project's ~150,000 migrated attachments originated here — and documents are exactly what legal discovery, audits, HIPAA requests and insurers ask for, with long retention.
Ten years of Papervision documents and their index metadata were archived into the Oracle ATP archive (part of the ~8 TB, ~150,000-attachment project), so staff can search and retrieve any document via Oracle APEX without keeping Papervision running.
Retiring Papervision came with real data-engineering challenges.
The source systems were out of vendor support — raising security, compliance and continuity risk. Archiving and decommissioning removed that risk.
Minimal documentation survived and few functional users remained who understood the applications, so we reverse-engineered the data model and validated it with the business.
Papervision stored content as files alongside a separate index, so we extracted both the file-based documents and their index database to keep everything findable.
Some applications hadn't been updated since 2007/2008 — dated formats, encodings and structures that required careful handling.
Ten years of records, consolidated into the Oracle ATP archive.
Imaged documents, forms and correspondence.
The index fields that make each document findable.
Employee document files where imaged.
Invoice, statement and financial-record images.
Clinical/records document images where in scope.
Documents searchable by their original index keys.
A governed sequence — completed and live in production.
Profiled the Papervision source and finalized the ten-year archival record set — tables, fields and attachments in scope.
Extracted ten years of Papervision history from the source, including documents/attachments, and standardized it for the archive.
Loaded the data into the consolidated Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing (ATP) archival database.
Built the 15–20 most-used Papervision reports in Oracle APEX and Microsoft Power BI for daily business needs.
Validated the archived Papervision data against source, deployed with role-based access and audit logging, and went live in production.
Retained a complete backup of the original data on the cloud, and provided ongoing Syntra support for any query.
What Catholic Healthcare Trust staff use every day.
Search by index keys and retrieve/download any archived document via the APEX portal.
Documents linked to related records where applicable.
Reports on document volumes and categories.
Staff search and browse the archived records themselves in the Oracle APEX portal, with filters and Excel/PDF export.
A full backup of the original source data is retained on the cloud, in addition to the archive.
Syntra provides ongoing support for any query on the archived data, if and when one arises.
Papervision was the primary source of the roughly 150,000 attachments migrated across the project. Ten years of documents and their index metadata were archived into the Oracle ATP archive and are retrievable via the Oracle APEX portal.
