Data migration platform comparison

Syntra ETL vs SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit

Compare Syntra ETL and SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit across enterprise data migration, transformation, validation, reconciliation, platform coverage and migration lifecycle capabilities.

    Last reviewed: September 2026

    Quick summary

SAP native migration tooling addresses loading into the SAP target. Syntra ETL adds the broader source extraction, profiling, transformation, validation, reconciliation and historical-data lifecycle around that load. These are complementary rather than alternatives, and this page sets out what the surrounding lifecycle needs to cover.

    How the platforms differ

    Syntra ETL

A purpose-built enterprise application data migration platform designed around source-to-target migration, transformation, validation, reconciliation, archival and migration intelligence.

    • DataMove — move and transform
    • DataVault — reconcile, preserve and govern
    • DataLens — analyse migration quality and outcomes

    SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit

The SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit is SAP's own tool for loading legacy data into S/4HANA, using predefined migration objects with file-based and staging-table approaches. From SAP S/4HANA 2020 and Cloud 2008 the LTMC transaction is superseded by the Migrate Your Data Fiori application, with LTMC retained read-only for existing projects.

    What to evaluate

The criteria that decide whether a platform fits an enterprise migration programme.

    • Where the data comes from, and what extracts, profiles and maps it before it reaches the target's loader.
    • Whether sources include non-SAP applications requiring legacy code crosswalks.
    • How many full rehearsal cycles the programme needs, and how corrections persist between them.
    • What reconciliation evidence is required back to the legacy source, not only load results.
    • Whether historical data should be archived rather than loaded, and the legacy system retired.

    Capability comparison

The Syntra ETL column states what the platform provides. The SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit column directs you to confirm scope directly with the vendor — capabilities, packaging and licensing change, and this page does not assert what another vendor does or does not offer.

Where each sits in the pipeline

Syntra ETL operates in front of the target's loader — extraction, profiling, mapping, transformation and validation — and behind it for reconciliation. SAP's own mechanism performs the load into S/4HANA. Replacing a vendor's supported load path would be a poor design; preparing well-formed, validated data for it is the useful contribution.

    These are complementary, not alternatives

Syntra ETL and the Migration Cockpit are commonly used together. Syntra ETL extracts from the source, profiles it, maps it, transforms it, validates it against the target's rules and generates output in the shape the Cockpit expects. The Cockpit performs the load. Syntra ETL then reconciles what arrived against what left. Replacing SAP's supported load mechanism would be a poor design; feeding it well is the useful contribution.

Mock loads, PPRs and production cutover

Enterprise migrations are rehearsed before they count. A first pre-production run surfaces the bulk of mapping and data-quality corrections, a second applies them and demonstrates readiness, and the production cutover follows. This repeatability is one of the clearest distinctions between a migration platform and a general integration or ETL tool: the question is not whether a job can be re-run, but whether corrections, exception state and reconciliation carry forward between cycles automatically.

    1. 1Mock / PPR 1Full extract, transform, load, reconcile and exception analysis.
    2. 2RemediationCorrections applied as repeatable rules, not one-off edits.
    3. 3Mock / PPR 2Re-run at full scale; readiness demonstrated rather than assumed.
    4. 4Production cutoverFinal extract, load, reconciliation and business sign-off.

    Migration reconciliation

A migration is approved on evidence. DataVault preserves each state so the chain below can be compared and every difference explained — record counts, control totals, field-level comparison, categorised exceptions and source-to-target traceability. Where a competitor’s reconciliation scope could not be established from public sources, the table above says so rather than claiming its absence.

    What happens to historical data?

Not everything should move into the new platform. Open and operationally required data migrates; closed history often carries retention obligations but no operational purpose, and loading it inflates the target and slows every migration cycle. Syntra ETL treats this as one decision with two destinations, which is what allows the legacy system to be switched off rather than kept alive for read access.

What Syntra ETL is designed for

Syntra ETL is designed for organisations that need a governed enterprise application migration lifecycle combining extraction, transformation, validation, target-ready loading, reconciliation, migration intelligence and historical archival.

    • Data is coming from several sources, or from non-SAP applications, into S/4HANA.
    • The programme runs multiple full rehearsal cycles and needs corrections carried automatically between them.
    • Reconciliation evidence across source, prepared and loaded states is needed for sign-off.
    • Historical data should be archived rather than loaded, and the legacy system retired.
    • The target is not SAP at all — in which case the Cockpit does not apply.

    Which approach fits your migration?

The decision should be based on the specific source and target applications, the data objects in scope, migration-cycle requirements, the validation approach, reconciliation requirements, the historical-data strategy and the cutover model — not on platform category alone.

Syntra ETL is designed for organisations that need a governed enterprise application migration lifecycle combining extraction, transformation, validation, target-ready loading, reconciliation, migration intelligence and historical archival.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Syntra ETL replace the SAP Migration Cockpit?
No. The Migration Cockpit is SAP's supported path for loading data into S/4HANA and it stays in the architecture. Syntra ETL handles extraction, profiling, mapping, transformation and validation in front of it, and reconciliation behind it.
When is the Migration Cockpit alone sufficient?
When the source is a single SAP system, the objects in scope are covered by SAP's predefined migration objects, data quality is already good, and your team can manage mapping and rehearsal cycles directly. That is a real scenario and worth confirming before adding tooling.
Is LTMC still the right transaction to use?
Not for new projects. From SAP S/4HANA 2020 and SAP S/4HANA Cloud 2008 onward, LTMC has been superseded by the Migrate Your Data Fiori application. LTMC remains available read-only for existing projects. Confirm the position for your specific release.
Can the Migration Cockpit handle non-SAP sources?
It can accept data from non-SAP systems, because it works from files or staging tables rather than reading the source directly. What it does not do is extract from, profile or map those sources — that work happens before the Cockpit regardless of what tooling performs it.
What about objects SAP does not provide a migration object for?
The Migration Object Modeler (LTMOM) allows custom objects and enhancements on on-premise and single-tenant editions. Confirm availability for your deployment, because it is not offered across every edition.
How does this affect the archive decision?
The Cockpit loads what you give it; it does not help decide what should not move. Where historical data carries retention obligations but no operational need in S/4HANA, archiving it and retiring the source is a separate exercise the Cockpit does not address.

    A note on this comparison
