    Frequently asked questions

    Is DataStage capable of ERP migration?
    Yes. It is a mature, high-throughput ETL and ELT platform and it will move ERP data. The evaluation question is not capability but coverage: how much of the object sequencing, target load formatting, cycle management and reconciliation you build in job design versus consume.
    What is the difference between an ETL engine and a migration platform?
    An ETL engine transforms and moves data. A migration platform adds what a transformation programme needs around that: knowledge of the target's object model and load mechanisms, dependency sequencing, repeatable rehearsal cycles, exception management carried between cycles, reconciliation structured for sign-off, and the migrate-versus-archive decision.
    We already run DataStage. Should we add anything?
    Not necessarily. If your team has ERP migration experience and understands the target's load mechanisms, DataStage can carry the programme. The usual reason organisations add a migration platform is the surrounding lifecycle rather than the transformation engine itself.
    Which handles very large data volumes better?
    DataStage's parallel processing engine is built for very large scale and that is a genuine strength. Enterprise migration volumes are usually well within both platforms' range, so throughput is rarely the deciding factor on a migration programme.
    Does DataStage help decide what should not be migrated?
    That is a scope and archival question rather than an ETL one. Where historical data carries retention obligations but no operational need in the new system, archiving it and retiring the source is a separate exercise from moving the active population.
